City evacuations continue; Red Cross still trying to reach Mariupol

Efforts to help civilians escape war-torn parts of Ukraine continued Saturday. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said 4,217 civilians had lately fled some of the country’s hardest-hit cities — including 1,263 who escaped in their own vehicles from Mariupol and Berdyansk, two port cities in the southeast.

As evening approached, the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has been trying to reach Mariupol, where a humanitarian crisis is unfolding, said its team had “yet to reach the city” and would not arrive by day’s end. Ukrainian officials have said that roughly 100,000 people remain trapped there.

Russia appears to be pulling back troops stationed in the Kyiv area, as Ukrainian forces slowly regain control of villages to the east and northwest of the capital, Britain’s Defense Ministry said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s withdrawal in the north was “slow but noticeable.” But Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych told national television that Ukrainians should prepare for “difficult fights” ahead in Mariupol and in southern and eastern parts of Ukraine.
