A waiter recommended a tasty-looking crab dish at a holiday restaurant – but I called the cops when I saw the bill

A TOURIST called the cops after seeing the extortionate bill she received for her simple crab dinner. Junko Shinba, 50, visited Seafood Paradise in Singapore last month but was left baffled by the price tag on her meal. But little did they know, they would end up leaving almost £1,000 poorer. As they sat down and ordered their meal, Junko claimed one eager waiter was consistently recommending a particular crab dish that would cost around £25. He failed to mention that the restaurant charges per 100g for the tasty crustacean. According to the receipt from the meal, the diners had chosen the Alaskan King Crab for their chili crab dish.  The Alaskan King Crab is one of the largest edible crabs in the world and can weigh between one and four kilograms. Junko’s bill therefore came to a staggering £1,070, with the chili crab costing some £760. Other dishes in the group’s meal were significantly cheaper, with the black pepper beef fried rice and crisp-fried yam ring coming to less than £16 each. Junko was left speechless after being handed the lengthy bill and the group racked their brains in a bid to work out how one dinner for four adults cost that much. She claimed that they were not informed of the total weight of the crab before it was cooked. “None of us were informed that the whole crab would be cooked only for us, as some other restaurants serve crabs partially,” she told AsiaOne. The meat from one Alaskan King Crab filled three plates to the brim, and the group was unable to stomach all the food. Left astounded by the bizarre bill, Junko asked the waiter to call the cops. When police arrived at the restaurant, staff showed the furious diner a receipt from another customer who had ordered a similar dish to prove they had not overcharged her. Eventually, the restaurant manager offered the tourist an £86 discount for the meal, which Junko’s pal paid for. Paradise Group, the company that owns the restaurant, said their staff had “clearly communicated” the price and weight of the crab when the group had put their order in, reported AsiaOne. Seafood Paradise said that the crab weighed around 3.5kg in total. “To prevent any miscommunication, the staff even brought the whole Alaskan King Crab to the table before preparation. “Upon payment, the customers refused to pay the bill and requested to make a police report. Hence, the restaurant manager assisted in making the police report,” they said. They also added that the hefty discount they offered Junko was given out of goodwill as they knocked the cost of 400 grams of crab off the bill after she said she didn’t have enough money to pay for it. Junko also reportedly contacted the Singapore Tourism Board, who forwarded the issue to the Consumers Association of Singapore. But this isn’t the only case that has left diners in a crabby mood as it comes after one woman splurged £175 on a lobster before releasing it back into the sea. The Swiss woman had gone to a seafood restaurant in Sardinia with her husband, before leaving guests shocked as she dropped the crustacean through a metal railing and into the open water.
