Apple has introduced major changes to iOS and the App Store in Japan under the Mobile Software Competition Act, effective December 18. Rolled out with iOS 26.2, the update allows alternative app marketplaces, new payment options, and user choice for default apps. Apple has also updated fees, introduced safeguards for security and child safety, and expanded developer tools, including alternative browser engines and side button access for voice apps. The changes apply only to iOS apps distributed in Japan.
