CHINA sent nearly 40 warplanes over Taiwan’s air defense zone in two waves on Friday in a worrying show of force for the small island. Taiwan reported on Friday that China entered its air space with 38 aircrafts, as China celebrated the founding of the People’s Republic of China over the Chinese-claimed island. The 38 planes include 18 J-16 and four Su-30 fighter jets, according to the Taiwan Defence Ministry. The ministry also reported Taiwanese fighters were in the air with the 22 planes aforementioned in addition to two nuclear-capable H-6 bombers and an anti-submarine aircraft. As Saturday started to roll in, the ministry then announced another 13 Chinese aircrafts had entered Taiwanese air space. They consisted of 10 J-16s, 2 H-6s, and an early warning aircraft. Taiwan sent combat aircraft to warn away the Chinese aircraft and also deployed missile systems to monitor the planes. Although the first wave of planes flew in an area close to the Pratas Islands and the two bombers in that wave flying closest to the atoll, the second wave flew into the Bashi Channel. This channel separates Taiwan and the Philippines and provides a key waterway linking the Pacific with the waters surrounding south China and landmasses in the South China Sea. In June, 28 Chinese aircraft had entered Taiwan’s air space just a day after the government attacked Taiwan’s foreign minister for attempting to promote Taiwan internationally. Since the event, China has beefed up its military and political pressure on the island to get Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty, while Taiwan announced it was an independent country that will defend its democracy.
