Denis Villeneuveâs âDune,â starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, has 11 nominations including best film, cinematography and original score. Jane Campionâs âThe Power of the Dog,â set in 1920s Montana and starring Cumberbatch as a ranch owner, has eight including best director and best film.
If Campion takes the directing trophy she will be only the third female winner in that category, but the second in two years after Chloe Zhao for âNomadlandâ in 2021.
Kenneth Branaghâs semi-autobiographical âBelfast,â the story of a childhood overshadowed by Northern Irelandâs violent âTroubles,â has six nominations including best film. Daniel Craigâs final James Bond thriller, âNo Time to Die,â Steven Spielbergâs musical âWest Side Storyâ and Paul Thomas Andersonâs coming-of-age drama âLicorice Pizzaâ have five nominations apiece.
Best-picture nominees are âDune,â âThe Power of the Dog,â âBelfast,â âLicorice Pizzaâ and disaster comedy âDonât Look Up.â
The separate category of best British film comprises âAfter Love,â âAli & Ava,â âBelfast,â âBoiling Point,â âCyrano,â âEverybodyâs Talking About Jamie,â âHouse of Gucci,â âLast Night in Soho,â âNo Time to Dieâ and âPassing.â
The contenders for best actor are Cumberbatch, Adeel Akhtar for âAli & Ava,â Mahershala Ali for âSwan Song,â Stephen Graham for âBoiling Point,â Leonardo DiCaprio for âDonât Look Upâ and Will Smith for âKing Richardâ
Leading actress nominees are Lady Gaga for âHouse of Gucci,â Alana Haim for âLicorice Pizza,â Emilia Jones for âCoda,â Renate Reinsve for âThe Worst Person in The World,â Joanna Scanlan for âAfter Loveâ and Tessa Thompson for âPassing.â The category is the most unpredictable of the night, with acclaimed performances by Kristen Stewart in Princess Diana biopic âSpencerâ and Olivia Colman in âThe Lost Daughterâ overlooked for nomination.
The British film academy has expanded its voting membership and shaken up its rules in recent years in an attempt to address a glaring lack of diversity in the nominations. In 2020, no women were nominated as best director for a seventh consecutive year, and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.
Awards organizers say they are committed to supporting new talent, and this year all the performers in the supporting actor category are first-time nominees. They include Woody Norman for âCâmon Câmonâ â at 11 years old the youngest nominee of the year â and Ariana DeBose, who plays Anita in âWest Side Story.â
The British awards, known as the BAFTAs, are usually held a week or two before the Academy Awards and have become an important awards-season staging post. This yearâs Oscars take place March 27.
