In one video, the women enter the shop where a man is working and appear to take items off the shelves, before the owner and women leave the shop. In a later clip, one of the women is crying as she crouches on the floor inside the store and the camera pans around to film what is happening outside. Another woman is aggressively dragged in by three men by her ankles and wrists and then dumped on the floor near the first woman looking visibly upset and terrified. In another video, a third woman is naked from the waist down while the fourth woman is forced to strip nude and they are both beaten with sticks by local men. The women are shouting and crying during the brutal attack and attempt to shield themselves with their arms. People around the attack are jeering and beeping car horns while the woman tries desperately to cover her chest with her arms. One of the other half-nude women appears to find the blue shawl on the floor and she uses it to cover up her cowering friend. The women were reportedly “paraded” up and down the street naked for an hour before the Punjab police were alerted and came to intervene. Police said that they received a call from residents which they immediately responded to and arrested the owner of the electric store and three employees working there. Five men were arrested in total for torturing and stripping the women in a busy market, after the women told the police that they only entered the shop to ask for some water. The women told police that as they entered the shop, the store owner Saddam and three of his employees accused them of theft and started beating them. The victims further told police that while the shopkeepers were beating them, other men from the market also joined and started torturing them. They dragged the women out of the shop, stripped them naked, and then videotaped the incident, the police said. Police added that upon the directives of the Central Police Office (CPO) Faisalabad, a case has been registered against four identified and eight unidentified men for detaining and torturing the women. Reportedly, the shopkeepers told police the women tore their own clothes off, and that the men involved were not at fault for the women’s actions. ‘HONOUR AND SHAME’ The ill-treatment of women in Pakistan has been well documented in recent years. A 14-year-old girl was doused with petrol and then burned alive by her uncle and a man allegedly stoned his wife to death, two months after two teenage girls were shot by their own family in a brutal “honour killing”. Much of Pakistan lives under an “honour” code where women who bring “shame” on the family can be subjected to violence or murder. A Christian nurse was reportedly tied up, stripped and tortured by a mob inside a hospital in Pakistan after a Muslim colleague falsely accused her of blasphemy, earlier this year. Blasphemy carries the death penalty under controversial laws in Pakistan. A mum and her four-year-old daughter were kidnapped and gang raped for two weeks after being lured with false promises of work last year. In May, two Pakistani men hired a hitman who shot and killed Mayra Zulfiqar, a law graduate, after she refused their advances and multiple pleas to the police. Saira Khan, has received death threats after revealing she is no longer a practicing Muslim after the news was reported in a Pakistani paper. A new law has come into force to tackle the horrifying treatment of women, as men who are found guilty of rape can now be chemically castrated as punishment for their crimes. This comes after the Prime Minister Imran Khan sparked outrage after blaming how women dress for a surge in rape cases.
