They say the man, who was carrying what they described as a “long gun”, was acting alone. He burst into a lecture hall at the University of Heidelberg and then turned the gun on himself, Bild reports. Investigators said that he had no political or religious motives, the paper added. He was reported to be a student himself and carried several rifles with him, the DPA news agency said. After opening fire, the gunman then fled the scene and his body was found later. Reinforcements have been sent to the scene and a large operation was underway in the town in southwestern Germany. In an initial statement Mannheim police said: “Large-scale deployment. Colleagues are still on site with strong forces – we will provide further information here.” The incident took place at the Neuenheimer Feld, where the natural science faculties and parts of the university hospital of Heidelberg University are located. The university is one of Germany’s best-known. Heidelberg is a picturesque university town in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, home to a population of around 160,000 people. Germany has been hit in recent years by a spate of attacks, mostly perpetrated by jihadists or far-right militants. School shootings however are relatively rare in Germany, a country with some of the strictest gun laws in Europe. In 2009, a former pupil killed nine students, three teachers and three passers-by at Winnenden, also in Baden-Wuerttemberg before also killing himself. In 2002, a 19-year-old former student, apparently in revenge for having been expelled, gunned down 12 teachers and two students at a school in Erfurt. He too then killed himself.
