Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, fondly called "Bapu" (the father) was a lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who used non-violent resistance to lead a successful campaign for Indian independence. His day of birth - 2 October 1869 - is today marked by the UN as the International Day of Non-Violence.
