RUSSIAN authorities reported a massive explosion in the border city of Belgorod, only 25 miles from the Ukrainian border. Witnesses reported a whistling noise before a blast blew a crater about 65feet wide in the centre of the large Russian city. According to preliminary information, there are no victims.” Some reports said the force of the explosion was so great that a car was launched onto the roof of a grocery store. The cause of the blast hasn’t been confirmed, but Belgorod has been the target of shelling from Ukraininan forces since the beginning of the war. Russia has also sent missile strikes over the city to reach nearby Kharkiv, and some allege the explosion could be a fallen bomb intended for the Ukrainian city. Neither the governor nor the mayor said what caused the explosion, but Gladkov said that the blast had sent a massive wave that shattered windows in an apartment building, damaged several cars and downed power line poles. Demidov said that residents of the buildings damaged in the blast could be moved to hotels. The Belgorod region, including the city of the same name, has been repeatedly hit by shelling since President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022. In January, Gladkov told Putin that 25 people had been killed and more than 90 injured in the region since the start of the offensive.
