Protesters in Kazakhstan are setting government buildings on fire. Here’s what to know.

MOSCOW — In an unprecedented challenge to Kazakhstan’s authoritarian regime, protesters angry over rising fuel prices have seized several government buildings across multiple cities, and some appear to be on fire.

The demonstrations, very rare for the Central Asian country of about 19 million, prompted the current government to resign and the president to declare a two-week state of emergency in three regions.

In Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city with a population of nearly 2 million, video footage posted to social media Tuesday night showed riot police firing stun grenades and tear gas at thousands of protesters moving toward the main square.

Then on Wednesday, despite the cabinet resignation and state of emergency, protesters stormed the city hall and several other government buildings. Thick black smoke was seen billowing out of the windows.
