A short-lived rebellion in June by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin raised speculation that Putin could be losing his grip or that it would mar his strongman image. However, the tyrant emerged with seemingly no permanent scars after Prigozhin’s bid for power ended in a fiery plane crash in August, reinforcing Putin’s absolute control.
