Zoleka Mandela dead: Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter dies at just 43 after brave cancer battle

FORMER South African President Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter has died of cancer at the age of 43. Zoleka Mandela died surrounded by friends and family, a spokesperson said, after fighting the disease for years. Zoleka died after a battle with cancer The Nelson Mandela foundation said in a statement: “We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba. “Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all.” Zoleka, who was first diagnosed with cancer in 2013, leaves behind four children. She was readmitted into hospital on Monday as a part of her ongoing treatment after her cancer returned. Recent scans revealed her cancer had spread to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord. She was the child of Mandela’s youngest daughter, Zindzi Mandela, and her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlongwane. Tributes have poured in for the poet and activist after her passing. One fan commented: “My heart is shattered, I have never connected with someone on social media like I did with this beautiful, brave, kind and loving woman.” Another said: “Cancer is just the most heartbreaking illness. You fought so valiantly and with all the grace and positivity. May your soul rest in peace and May God cover her children and family.”
